The Area

Lake Prespa, Mount Pelister, Galicica National Park — a hidden corner of the Balkans.

Lake Prespa is one of Europe's oldest freshwater lakes, shared by North Macedonia, Greece, and Albania. It sits at 853m altitude, ringed by two national parks, and is home to over 400 species of birds — including pelicans that breed on Golem Grad island. Unlike its larger neighbour Lake Ohrid an hour west, Prespa has stayed off the tourist trail. That's the point. Here you swap crowded shorelines for silence, and you swap restaurant queues for a taverna where the owner cooks what was caught that morning.

Our villa sits on the western shore in Pretor, with Mount Pelister rising behind us and Galicica National Park across the water. Everything below is within a short drive or a doorstep walk.
