Things to Do

Hike, paddle, eat, watch birds, do nothing. All year, all weather.

Prespa changes character with the seasons. Summer is for the lake — swimming, paddleboarding, sunset dinners at Dupeni. Autumn is for hiking when Mount Pelister turns gold and the bird migration peaks. Winter is for snow walks, fireplaces, and the kind of silence that you only get when most tourists have left. Spring is for cherry blossoms in Resen, breeding pelicans on Golem Grad, and the first warm afternoons on the beach.

Below is what you can do here. Your hosts can arrange most of it — just ask.

Hiking

🌲

Pelisterski Oci (Pelister's Eyes)

Moderate · 6-8 hours · 14 km

The classic Mount Pelister hike to two glacial lakes at 2,200m altitude. Pine forests, alpine meadows, and the lakes themselves — small, deep, and perfectly reflective on a calm day. Start early; weather changes fast at altitude.

⛰️

Pelister Summit (2,601m)

Hard · 8-10 hours · 18 km

For experienced hikers. The highest point of the range with views across to Albania and Greece on a clear day. Best done June through September.

🌳

Molika Pine Forest Loop

Easy · 2-3 hours · 6 km

A gentle loop through the rare endemic Molika pine forest. Good for families, kids, and anyone who wants a forest walk without the elevation. Picnic spots along the way.

🗻️

Galicica viewpoint walk

Easy · 1-2 hours

From the top of the Galicica pass, short walks lead to viewpoints where you see Lake Prespa on one side and Lake Ohrid on the other. The drive up is half the experience.

🧠 Hosted hiking with Filip

Filip is an experienced mountain guide who knows every trail in the region. He can lead any of these hikes, arrange shuttles, and point out things you'd miss on your own — rare flowers, the best swimming spots in the alpine lakes, the abandoned shepherds' huts.

On the water

🏔️

Swimming

May - September

Slivnica Beach (10 minutes' walk) for easy access. Dupeni Beach for the more dramatic setting near the Greek border. Water is clean and warm in summer.

🏄🏻

Stand-up paddleboarding

Boards available locally

Lake Prespa is usually calm in the morning — ideal for paddleboarding. We can point you to where to rent boards or borrow ours.

🏌🏻

Windsurfing

Afternoon winds, late spring - autumn

Reliable afternoon winds make Prespa a quiet favourite among Balkan windsurfers. Filip surfs here regularly and can show you the best launch points.

🚤

Kayaking to Golem Grad

Half-day · weather-dependent

Paddle out to the only island in Lake Prespa — "Big Town" — with its pelican colonies and ruins of an ancient monastic settlement. Best in calm conditions.

Nature & culture

🦅

Bird-watching

Year-round · peaks spring & autumn

400+ recorded species. Dalmatian pelicans breed on Golem Grad. Cormorants, herons, raptors, and dozens of songbirds. Bring binoculars or borrow ours.

⛪️

Kurbinovo Monastery

20-min drive · year-round

Some of the best-preserved 11th-century Byzantine frescoes in Europe. Viktorija can arrange a guided visit — she's a retired heritage conservator and brings the place to life.

🍲

Slow food & local producers

Year-round

Macedonian organic farms, traditional tavernas, ajvar (red pepper relish), local wine. We can connect you to producers or arrange a home-cooked meal at the villa.

🚴

Cycling village routes

Easy to moderate

Quiet back roads through villages around the lake. Apple orchards, stone churches, the occasional herd of cows blocking the road. Bike rental can be arranged.

🎿

Skiing (winter)

Kopanki ski centre, Pelister

A small ski centre on Mount Pelister opens in winter. Modest by Alpine standards but a fun day out when there's snow.

🍽️

Sunset dinner at Dupeni

Year-round

The taverna at Dupeni beach is the local sunset ritual. Grilled lake fish, salad, local wine, and the sun dropping behind Galicica. Bring cash.
